Welcome - For Rhode Island
I'm launching this blog with the intention of creating a space for authenticity, self care support, and balanced lifestyle tips & information.
As some of you may know, I've been growing my private practice over the last several months, and it has been amazing. I can't tell you all how grateful I am for all of your support. Thank you a million times over.
For those of you who are new here, I'm so happy you've found my blog. :)
My name is Laura Johnson, and I am a licensed massage therapist. I've never loved doing anything more than massage. I had worked in customer service since I was sixteen, and once I moved to Austin, Texas, I enrolled myself in massage school. Almost eight years later, I realize that was the best decision I ever made.
It was tough at first; getting out of school and finding my specialty was incredibly overwhelming. Luckily, I began to work with a fellow therapist who had been practicing bodywork for over thirty years. I've had lower back issues since I was twelve, and after practicing massage therapy for a year and a half with limited attention to my body mechanics, I started experiencing much more upper back and shoulder pain than ever before. I figured I'd get a massage from my coworker, get some deep tissue or trigger point work, and feel better until my postural habits got the best of me again. So I went in, and as I got off the table, I had no pain at all! I had never felt such a change! It was almost euphoric!
That's when I realized I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what he had done, why I had been hurting so, what muscles where in play and how to retrain them, what pain patterns were present, and what all of it meant!
I was hooked on structural bodywork.
A curiosity about the human body and its movements, functions, and common impairments must exist outside of the basic knowledge retained from school. That's where I differ from most therapists. Along with having an extensive understanding of emotional holding patterns of the body, I learn something new from each body I work on, and apply it to the next.
I strive to help my clients maintain physical health and wellness, as well as emotional and mental balance. Through my work, I present my clients with awareness of their bodies in a safe, controlled environment. I view my job as one of education and service; informing them on the causes of their complaints and creating an individualized plan outside of hands on massage therapy that they can apply to maintain a pain free lifestyle.
I couldn't practice what I love without my willing and wonderful clients, so again, thank you all; for your business, for your feedback, and for your amazing support. And for my new friends, I hope you find this blog helpful, entertaining, and educational. I look forward to seeing all of you!
From My Heart To Yours - Always,
